The Toyota Kalahari Botswana 1000 Desert Race from 22 to 24 June in Jwaneng, the most prestigious sporting event in Botswana and the flagship of the South African Cross Country Series (SACCS), will pose a demanding challenge with crews and riders being made to work hard for good results at the only marathon event on the calendar.
The weekend’s programme features a feast of national championship racing with round three of the SACCS Championship, rounds three and four of the SA National Cross Country Motorcycle Championship and round two and three of the BMS Motorcycle and Quad Championships. The event also features an invitation race for non-championship riders wishing to experience the adventure of cross country racing.
"The event has attracted an outstanding entry in both the car and motorcycle categories. The weekend promises to provide for some spectacular racing when crews and riders open proceedings with the respective qualifying races on Friday, 22 June," said SACCS chief executive officer Archie Rutherford. "As with previous years the route is spectator friendly and there are numerous vantage points where enthusiasts can follow their favourites. Given the high priority the people of Botswana place on the race, traffic volumes will be high, and enthusiasts are urged to exercise extreme caution."
The Botswana Police Service will again be on full alert to control traffic and crowds that descend on vantage points and the overnight camping areas. Safety during this popular event is our main concern, and we urge enthusiasts to respect and obey police officials and marshals at all times.
"Once again, we cannot fault the co-operation we have had from the Botswana Police Service, the Botswana Tourist Organisation (BTO), the Jwaneng Town Council, Debswana, the Botswana National Sports Council and Botswana Motorsport," Rutherford said. "Without the enthusiastic help these organisations provide it would be impossible to organise what is a weekend of world class motorsport."
